CHAPTER 14

I received a fanfare of ovations as I stepped into the hallway the next day. Everyone was cheering me on and it appeared my fame was spreading comprehensively and fast. I felt a sting of pride although I knew I had to be careful not to be carried away by the popularity and shouldn’t form attachments. I was here on a mission to kill, taking vengeance for my father’s death, not to make friends. My father had died on this defiled ground at the hands of these brutes, and they were going to pay for it with every drop of their blood.

As I smiled breezily at the students who moved along the corridor, I winced inside. I couldn’t afford to start liking dragons and the problem now was that I had started to become quite fond of Gwen. I wouldn’t want to see anything happen to her; I would hate myself for it. No matter how I was going to proceed, she would feel betrayed in the process. Killing the king would hurt everybody and turn me into the most sought after criminal of the age. I needed to tread with caution.

Tonight, I had to forward my report to the academy from the city gate and I had no idea what to put in that report. I didn’t even know how I would get past the security to carry out my mission? My own people back home were waiting for me and counting on that report. The thought of Earth Walkers filled me with sadness and conflicted feelings because I had begun to think of the dragons as my people, too. Gwen had certainly become one of my people, so had Master Arthur’s family. Could I really live with myself if anything were to happen to them? Maybe I could try to convince the dragon assassins to minimise their killings. If we could focus only on the king, perhaps, we might find a way to save both of our kind. The killings, after all, had become a bit much and senseless. Yet, my desire to avenge my father trumped these emotions. I was stuck between two camps without any idea of how to break free.

Gwen came up behind me and threw herself over my back. She wrapped her hands around my neck.

“We did it!” she screamed.

“Get off me, Gwen,” I answered light-heartedly, but I couldn’t prevent a smile escaping from my lips.

Gwen jumped down and did a twirl in the hall, her brown hair now cut so short when it otherwise would have been cascading down her back. Though I had thought of her as rather big at first, I had changed my opinion of her. She was shaped like a woman, with soft curves; the opposite of me. I was tall and muscular and unfortunately rather flat chested. She was so full of life; her joy had started to become contagious. When she was happy, I was happy and if she were sad, I would become sad too. She had that kind of influence on the people around her; she was a merry-go-round kind of person.
